For I was hungry and you fed me – Matthew 25:35.

Our “Feed the Hungry” Mission Project was to live this Bible verse.  During the month of June, MLC members donated funds to be used in packing Mercy Meals through Chapter 25 of Lincoln, Nebraska.  After the worship service on Sunday, August 18th, 57 volunteers of all ages packed 8,572 meals for the hungry in the church basement. Using four “lines” to pack the Mercy Meals, the task was handled like a group of experts! Probably because many of those volunteers have packed meals in two previous times that we have worked with Chapter 25 in the last few years!

What’s in a package of food?  Sometimes referred to as a “Mercy Meal”, a package consists of ingredients formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by an undernourished child’s body and mind.  One package feeds six people by utilizing a pan and water.

Workers measured out a scoop of 6 dehydrated vegetables, a scoop of chicken flavoring with added 21 vitamins & minerals, a cup of fortified crushed soy, and a cup of high-quality white rice.
Scoop, measure, dump…REPEAT.
Scoop, measure, dump… REPEAT!
With four lines running, it was lots of measure, dump, and REPEAT!
Time to weigh each bag. Two scales are used on each of the four lines.
Workers may need to add just a bit of rice or take some out to get the weight to be just right!
Baker makes sure this one passes the weight test.
Each bag weighs .8 lbs.
On to the seal machine.
Seal, then label and prepare for the boxing.
A whole lot of labels going on!
For a final touch of love, Garret added a few stickers to the Orphan Grain Train boxes!

For more than 10 years, Chapter 25 (previously known as Kids Against Hunger) has been working diligently with local communities, businesses, and congregations to eliminate local and worldwide hunger for children and families.  They distribute food through local sources and on a larger scope through Orphan Grain Train.  Last year, Orphan Grain Train distributed 4.6 million meals and has worked in 65 countries as well as helping people in need in the USA.  Read more about Chapter 25 at:    or

Like a well-oiled machine, the project was completed in a short time!  A total of $3,000 was used to pack the 8,572 meals.  The end result to those who are hungry…Priceless!
